National adoption and foster care programme
In Romania, we trained domestic families who wanted to adopt an abandoned child until 2018 and accompanied and supported them on their journey until the child was integrated into the new family. We also trained foster families in cooperation with the local authorities to enable them to take in an abandoned child until a stable and long-term solution was found. We continued to look after the children in the foster family and worked with the family of origin at the same time, as the primary aim is always to reintegrate the children into their families of origin. In cases where this was not possible, the children were placed with Romanian families for adoption. Since the beginning of this work in 1997, Agapedia Romania has had a waiting list of Romanian families willing to adopt. This service has now been completely handed over to the local authorities, who are now continuing this important task according to our standards.
